Philips 639

INTERESTINGLY, one of this phone’s selling points is that it has a blue-tinted mirror on its cover. Philips said the mirror is ideal for users who need to check their appearance while on the move.

Does this mean the 639 is targeted at women? No, men too can use the mirror for the same purpose. And better yet, since it’s integrated with a handphone, guys can disguise the fact that they are checking their appearance. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

But that’s just my opinion. There may be other uses that guys may have for the mirror, such as checking out chicks without being obvious about it or using it to signal a passing ship if stranded on a deserted island.

Anyway, the most important thing is that the 639 does not look like a ladies’ phone. The casing has rounded edges with a metallic finish and chrome highlights, which would appeal to both sexes.

The phone is compact, lightweight and very pocketable.

Coming back to the looking glass – this is no ordinary reflecting surface. It is actually a PolyED monochrome display screen, which Philips calls a “Magic Mirror.” Whenever a call or message comes through, the caller’s phone number or an SMS (short message service) icon appears on the surface. Cool, eh?

The screen is based on Philips’ Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. It also displays other information, such as the date, signal strength, battery life, and the time whenever the cover is flipped open.

There’s also a bit of onscreen animation – if you enable the phone’s Zoo application and press the volume button, you’ll see five types of animals come to “life” on the Magic Mirror, complete with sound effects and a cutesy score. You’ll be amused for all of five seconds, believe me.

Open the clamshell and you will see the internal screen, which performs as expected and is easily viewed even under bright sunlight.
